Operation: Tri-umph Party Review

Oops, I messed up my schedule so now I have two party reviews in a row. Oh well.

Hello penguins! Today I am going to be talking about Operation: Tri-umph, also known as Operation: Doom. I sure am late posting this, so let's get started.

First of all, I am going to talk about the rooms. During the first week, only the Snow Forts was decorated. I do not think this is a good idea, nor did the community, and I am fully aware of why; This room isn't very good.
The dance floor does not look okay. It has these awkward ellipses in the middle that make the floor look odd; I'm glad they haven't done it since. The satellite sticking into the ground appears like it's facing completely in the opposite direction.... for some odd reason. I do like how the flags have been turned into disco balls, though. That's cool.

In week three, my favorite decorations were released.
I like the Plaza, but I don't know why the Pet Shop, Park, the three hotel rooms, and the Underground Pool aren't in gray. Oh well. I like how the items available in this room are in a briefcase instead of a crate as the last two were.

Now I am going to judge review the music in this party.

The first track, 1105, is quite obnoxious. It has a ton of screaming in the background, and it gets annoying very quickly. It is quite repetitive and repeats itself after less than a minute, 55.353 seconds to be exact. It never comes to a complete stop; it is quite definite where it begins and ends. The buildup seems to have just 5 or 6 notes used multiple times. Somewhere near the middle of the track, there is a portion that just plays twelve notes, made up of four different piano keys, while the artist repeatedly presses the same button on an 808 drum really quickly, which bothers me quite a bit.

The Town Center's music, 1109, is a remake of Track 297 from the Fall Fair parties, and is quite fitting with how much buzz the Town Center recieved in the second week of this party. It includes the buzzing of small vehicles in it, matching how it encourages playing around with little cars and stuff; not to mention that the most popular cars, the Wheelers, are from the Fair 2011.

And finally, the Cave Maze's music, 899, is welcoming and fun. It starts off slowly, but gets better as time goes on. It begins with some odd (possibly string) instrument, which plays two measures four times, but then it turns into an epic tune reminding me of the Festival of Flight for a few seconds and then encores the two measures four more times. After this portion of the track, a magnificent xylophone part is played and really reminds me of the Adventure Party 2009 and a bit of the Temple of Fruit and the Underwater Expedition from 2012. This xylophone part is definitely my favorite part of the song; I am a bit disappointed that it isn't present for longer.

The items were quite controversial for this party, and now I'll explain why.

This party has no new free items, but instead has 3 returning free items and 18 new free items for members only. They tried to boost sales for memberships, so they spent their time remaking a few old free items as members only, when they should have just let them be. The worst of these is probably the Music Jam Cap (ID 1266). Said cap, which was re-released for the 10th Anniversary Party, is for all players; yet the Dance Battle Cap (ID 21077), which is completely identical, is for members only.

Besides that, a few of the items, especially in the Town Center, seem just a tad improbable. For example, a large spoon will serve no purpose unless you run a site such as mine or PengFeed.

I know it's been said a bunch, but I wish they would've made at least three items for non-members.

And now, the most important factor of every party, the playability.

While we didn't get many things to do in the first week of the party, a lot more content was released in the second week. The Town Center has some really nice, fun things to do. We can play on the roads and the baseball diamond while we are super small.

The third week, the Plaza rooms were released, and this set was definitely the best. It had the maze returning from the Cave Maze event from May 2015. A lot of people reacted as if this was a bad or stupid thing, but I think it is quite wonderful. It gives newer players the opportunity to play a maze, and it adds to the otherwise small amount of events to do at this event. In doing this, they also give older players the chance to complete the maze, had they forgotten to log in for a few weeks in May 2015. I would say that the playability in this party is hit or miss.

The storyline for this event is simple and basic. Herbert decided that to make the penguins less of a nuisance, he would build a dance party at the Snow Forts. Second, he would use a shrinking machine to make all of the penguins really small. And third of all, he would take the color out of 2 and 1/2 rooms on the wonderful island of Club Penguin. To stop Herbert's evil scheme, the penguins had to find the main controls for the machines and shut it down. This is all well and good, except for a few questions: What would hosting a dance party do? I'm not completely sure. How would shrinking penguins make them less of a nuisance? Why didn't Herbert make any big machines like the Popcorn Bomb and the Sun Blocking Ray? This plan seems as he Herbert has stopped trying. In retrospect, this story sucks.

This party was a bit of a let-down. It had a few decent decorations, and the music was overall okay. The items weren't good, but it had a decent amount of things to do for a few days. The biggest problem was probably the story. I'd give this party a 4/10. Goodbye!

I would like to thank the Club Penguin Wiki and The Club Penguin Wiki Archives for use of .SWF files to take screenshots of, as well as music files. If you would like to see the unedited, uncut version of this blog post for whatever reason, click here.

Fashion Festival Party Review

Hello penguins! Today I'll be reviewing the Fashion Festival from August 2015. Two reviews in two weeks? You people are spoiled. Anyway, here I begin.

First of all, the rooms. From the few rooms that we got, I really enjoy them from the start through week two. My favorite room is the Stadium. It has a lot of fun things to do, nice coloring on everything, and has a nice blue instead of the sand seen in many of the other rooms. It also features a nice golden puffle statue atop the waterfall.

The Dock is also really nice. It has a nice stage that fits the theme very nicely, and the voting booth even has a Party Hat on.

But at the start of week three, the winners of each category were announced in a very annoying way. The winners were announced in tall frames instead of a booth, which would have been helpful, as it was during the Festival of Snow.

One room that I didn't like throughout the whole party, though, was the Epic Wave. This room debuted at the Teen Beach Movie Summer Jam in August two years prior, and was lots of fun. This time, the coloring was all weird. The rest of the party had a nice even coloring. Plenty of darks, plenty of lights. But the Epic Wave just had darks. 80% or more was either dark purple or dark blue, which is quite unappealing.

The music is notably enjoyable.
The main theme reminds me of the Fashion Show in February 2012, which, I assume, is what it was going for.

As for the other tracks, the Snow Forts comes from the Music Jam 2014 and actually fits, which is a miracle at this point. The Dock may or may not be new music. It sounds quite familiar, but I can't seem to find the source. This track is wonderful. The Forest seems to have new music, which is quite nice and fits the theme.

But most of all, my favorite track in this party is for the Epic Wave, which has been recycled from the Teen Beach Movie Summer Jam of August 2013. It has grand instrumentation and doesn't get annoying, even after long periods of time. It's one of my favorite tracks in the game, up there with the Winter Fiesta 2008 theme. It also slightly reminds me of Pump It by the Black Eyed Peas simply for the instruments used.

This party had one item. Just one. It's a little less than two, but a bit more than zero. It's a background.

This is the Fashion Festival background. It's not good. The stage portion is fine, but the flowers are kind of mediocre. Dot had no reason to be here, and since they only have one or two drawings of her new outfit this is the only one they use and I'm sick of seeing it everywhere. The shadows don't even look right. Also, this item focuses on the classy stage while having nothing to do with the other two stages, which is stupid. It would be nice if there were different versions of this item without Dot in them, but this is what we got. Oh well.

This party has arguably more playability than most other parties in 2015. The 3 stages had playability already, but the main feature of this party was to create outfits, submit them, and then vote on them; But to submit outfits, you had to get a ticket. The way to get tickets was, you had to vote on ten outfits in the voting booth. This most likely prevented users from spamming outfits and overloading the system and preventing all others from collecting likes.

Another cool playability feature is that every two or three days, the categories on each stage would change. This keeps the stages fresh and interesting and justifies the length of the party - three whole weeks.

As for story, once again, this party has none. I'm glad that when I review the Inside Out Party next month, it will break the streak of no stories.

In conclusion, this party is good. It's not necessarily great, but far from being bad or obnoxious. It had some good decorations, and some bad decorations. it had some okay music. While the item wasn't very good, it had good activities to make up for it. I'd give it a solid 7/10. Goodbye!

Descendants Party Review

Hello penguins! Today I will be discussing the controversial Descendants Party of September 2015. So without further ado, let us now commence with the analysis.

As for the rooms, there are only 3 decorated rooms and no special party rooms. So for Club Penguin, this isn't good. This will probably be a short section.

The Mine Shack is a boring room. The exterior to Aurodon Prep looks too much to a castle and too little like an actual school. Aside from that, the paths to the Dojo Courtyard and the Skatepark aren't very easy to see, and the entrance to the Mine feels like a joke, being a mere trap door created using the wood from the regular Mine building. I've seen the grass before in the Puffle Park and the Water Party; but this grass looks as if it is meant to be real, whereas the grass in the Puffle Park is astroturf and the grass seen in the Water Party is sod. One cool thing about it, though, is that the statue changes every couple minutes into something cool.

The School is alright. It looks how I imagine a fancy school would. I enjoy the study room quite a lot. It doesn't feel too crowded, much unlike the cafeteria in the regular School. The classroom is not nearly as good; It is very typical, and it has some obnoxious square-patterned stained-glass windows. Not to mention a few graphical bugs.
This chair has no seat. I suppose this student will have to stand.
The Iceberg is, by far, the best room in this party. It has a dark sky, some nice building designs featuring some interesting things painted on the wall. In the distance, a small array of small ice chunks can be seen floating in the water, which is really cool. The Aqua Grabber is placed in a spot that is convenient, and it doesn't feel like it's there because it has to be; instead it feels like it was placed there because that was the most natural location for it. One note, though, is that the clotheslines have pants that penguins are unable to wear, due to them not having legs.

3 rooms for a party seems really lazy. It is slightly understandable with the current art team of 2 people, with them also having to design catalogs and such, but at the time, Club Penguin had a larger art team and they made what is, to this day, the smallest official party of the 2010s. It wouldn't hurt to decorate the Mine and the Forest. The Mine hasn't been decorated at all since it was redesigned in 2013, and I was really hoping that it would be decorated for this party. Unfortunately, that's a bunch of lost potential.

This party had some very interesting music choices. At this party, every single decorated room had different music.

The first track, 954, which played at the Iceberg, is not good. It sounds like dubstep (of which I am not a fan), but attempting to be a cheap pop music instrumental. Another thing that's not helping is that you could lay the vocals from Kesha - Cannibal on top of Track 954 and it would fit quite well.

The second track, 955, which played at the Mine Shack, is quite bland. It sounds as if it's heard in the background of all school movies (Lemonade Mouth, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Monsters University, etc.). It's nothing special. As I type this sentence, I have been listening to this track for a mere 4 minutes and I have already grown tired of such monotonous music.

The third track,  956, which played at the School, is out of place, but mediocre otherwise. It starts off sounding like it was directly pulled from the Teen Beach Movie soundtrack, and then quickly gets all cheery and such. Trumpets start playing, and penguins begin to cheer in the background. The first point that I would like to make is that I do not like the cheering. If I wanted to hear obnoxious noises from others when they weren't necessary, I would spend more time with my siblings. The next topic is that this song is way too cheery for a school. When I enter school, I usually think, "The next 7 hours are going to be boring." I have never walked into school on a regular day and thought, "What a glorious day this is, that I get to continue my education!" Happy songs like this do not belong in a school, much less a quiet school such as this.

Also, apparently the Town Center had different music for this party, but it sounds identical to the regular Town Center music.

The costumes are plentiful, but mostly forgettable. I originally thought there were only 4 character costumes (because there were 4 characters on the login screen), but it turns out that there were 6 characters. I only know 2, though, those 2 being Mal and the son of Cruella De Ville.

The head items are so bland that only 2 of the 6 look like parts of costumes. The rest appear as if they come from the Penguin Style in 2013.
If I didn't look it up, I wouldn't know if the hair in the bottom-right corner is from a costume, or if it is the one in the top-right.
The feet items available are all boots. None are particularly special, with the exception that one set is blue. I am aware that in the movie (that I didn't watch), the characters most likely wore boots, but they look so generic that they could've used previous feet items instead.
Remember that the artists couldn't make more party rooms because of these bland items.
But don't forget, there were non-member items available in the interface. Most of them are forgettable. The first 4 are variants on things we already had. The only things I could find use for were the last 2 non-member items, with one of them being a literal stick.
Since when do dogs exist in the Club Penguin universe?

This party has very little playability. This party was marketed as a party of imagination, but to do that, we need to be given the material to do so; at this party, we were not given that.

The Mine Shack had no playability at all. This room would be completely useless if it didn't have the path to the Iceberg.

The school has very little playability; the only thing I found to do at the school is taking part in class. Penguins could potentially have conversations with others in the study room or the hallway, but that can barely be considered as playability.

The Iceberg has a few things to play with. First off, there is a child's wagon that could be used for sitting in, if the need arises. Featured also is a big building with 2 stories and a balcony, with open doors to allow penguins to see into the second floor. There are other buildings that are less beneficial to playing and storytelling. Not only are there things to enjoy on the Iceberg, but there is also a pier extending to the Northeast, possibly to go fishing on. This is positively the best room for playability at this party.

This party has no story whatsoever, which is a shame, for a decent story may have saved this party from such an unpleasant rating.

This party was not good. It had lackluster rooms, annoying music, unmemorable items, and little-to-nothing to do. On the other hand, the Iceberg was nice to look at and had things there that could occupy me for at least 3 minutes. This party gets a 2/10. Goodbye!

I would like to thank the great people at the Club Penguin Wiki (especially the Wiki Archives) for information and use of .swf files for analysis. I could not have made this review without these sites.

The Statue

A fun little secret about the Mine Shack from the Descendants Party is the statue. Every few minutes, it would morph. If it was a penguin, it would transform into a beast. If it was a beast, it would transform into a king penguin. The king is most likely a character in an old Disney princess movie, and the beast is a reference to the beast from Beauty and the Beast. It morphs similar to metal melting, being reformed, and hardening again without any metalsmithing. It's really cool. If you would like to see it morph, you might want to check out the .SWF file.

Zootopia Party Review

Hello penguins! Today I'm writing a review of the currently ongoing Zootopia Party, which began on May 18th and ends on July 6th. Many penguins in the community seem to like this party; now I am going to write about what I think about it.

The artwork is very good. With the exception of the Snow Forts, all are similar enough to be easily recognized, but also different enough to be interesting and fun. The Dock is themed after Bunnyburrow, and it has some great decorations - lots of hay bales, a farmer's market, a pie shop, and a lemonade stand.
The Coffee Shop is really nice as well. It has a stone floor, which wasn't necessary, but still really cool. Likewise, it has a fireplace with photos and the like on the mantle, which wasn't necessary, but nice to have.
Despite the grand decorations in all of the other rooms, my favorite place would have to be the Plaza. It has nice coloring, nice shading, and nice placement of plants, trees, and vines, my favorite part of this place would probably be the tree by the Mall.
The left part of the trunk reminds me of a gorilla's foot.
Next up, the sounds. The music at the Dock is really nice and fits the tone really well. It's what I imagine someone who has never been to a farm thinks a farm sounds like.
The music in the Town Center, Plaza, and Forest is not good. It has an okay bassline, but the bongos in the background do not fit the tone at all. They probably should have left some notes as staccato; instead, most notes use the damper pedal and it is totally unnecessary. I wish this wasn't the main theme for this party.
On a lighter note, the Coffee Shop music is really cool. It starts off with the sounds of an upright bass; I love the sounds of an upright bass. Then, a piano comes in and starts playing smooth jazz. It's really soothing and fits the theme. I wish there was a variation of this in the Town Center.
The Snow Forts music is alright. It has the same damper pedal effect as the music in the Town Center, but some good instrumentation begins to play and it gets better. It has many instruments such as handbells, bongos, and what may be a flute or picollo.
The Stadium music is bad. Not because the song itself is bad, but because the song sounds like a weird mutant form of bluegrass, and that has nothing to do with a DMV.
The Police Station music is not good. I also like this song, but a song called "Rocking Pizza" should not be played in a police station.

There is a ton of playability available at this party, especially in the Forest and Police Station. The Big Donut (which Zootopia totally didn't steal from Steven Universe despite it looking very similar) can be entered so penguins can work there, which is cool, but the stools outside don't work. Trying to sit on one will result in your penguin standing behind it. But the cheese truck is cool.
There are vendors at the Dock, Snow Forts, and Forest, which are all different. One place serves pie, one serves pawpsicles, and one serves cheese. This encourages roleplaying, similar to the popcorn vendor at the Lighthouse during Halloween. I wish there was one in the Town, though.
My favorite place for playing, though, is the Stadium. The DMV has a race track in it, similar to the Stadium during the Turbo Race 3000, one of my favorite events of 2014. Not only that, but it has not one, not two, not four, not five, not six, not seven, not eight, but three desks at the DMV. This is to shorten the waiting time and hire more sloths.

Now, the costumes. They are really great, but also really bad. Allow me to explain.
Most costumes look really cool, but the Judy head has some really ugly makeup, even after the redesign. I'm not sure why Nick's head has a tie when the body has a tie, and Flash's face looks kinda weird; not weird enough for me to complain about it, but wierd.
Judy's head is the worst. It looks like somebody put excessive makup on a penguin and didn't know what Judy actually looked like in the movie. The eyelashes are really big and annoying. The eyebrows are not necessary. Normal rabbit costumes wouldn've have eyebrows. The shirt collar should be included in the body item instead of the head item.
No amount of Simpsons references will save this crime against sprite design.
The player-card displays are all a bit off, but the Judy display is the worst.
Let's play Are you Creeped Out Yet? with the Zootopia cast.
What's up with those ears?
This one isn't AS bad. My main problem with the other 2 is the smile. This one is the same, but the smile is cut off.
There is no way that any penguin could make their mouth look like that. No way, no how.
The worst thing about these items, though, is that there is not one free item. Sure, many items are free for members, but non-members get nothing, similar to the Wilderness Expedition and the Puffle Party.

As for story, this party contains none.

Now I'll discuss what everybody wants to discuss, the length of the party.
This party is 7 weeks long, the longest party ever, destroying the record set by the Star Wars Party in 2013. While the Star Wars Party had lots of content, this party has significantly fewer party rooms and places to explore. So do I think it will grow stale after a few weeks? Well, a bit. I am typing this 5 weeks into the party. I am already a bit bored by seeing Tundra Town so much, but how long it sticks around shouldn't give a good party a bad reputation.

This party was pretty fun. It had some cool, interesting rooms, some great roleplaying possiblities, some okay costumes, and a few good songs. I'd give this party a 7/10. Goodbye!
